A Conversation With the President of the Overseas Press Club of Cambodia

Dutch freelance journalist Ate Hoekstra was this week re-elected president of the Overseas Press Club of Cambodia (OPCC) for a second term. After a difficult year in a world confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, he is firmly focused on 2021.

Hoekstra has been based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia since 2012 and also covers Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Laos.

As a correspondent he regularly writes for the Dutch newspapers Trouw and Het Financieele Dagblad, as well as for Licas News and Deutsche Welle.

Before moving to Cambodia he worked as a freelance journalist and communication expert in The Netherlands. He covers many different topics, including politics, economy, and environmental issues.

Hoekstra spoke with The Diplomat’s Luke Hunt about wealth inequality, press freedom, and a media industry constantly under financial and political pressure.
